In keeping with other modern electronic deadbolt systems, Kwikset have chosen to include their patented Smartkey technology cylinders into the key portion of the lock.
It is quite well understood across the locksmith and residential security products markets that the Kwikset Smartkey products have some inherent faults that render the security of their products, ineffective. We have mentioned in this blog before and repeatedly about some of these faults and issues. We receive a significant and increasing number of hits to this site about Kwikset Smartkey Problems. Recently an issue has surfaced that allows the locks to be bypassed with absolutely no visible damage to the mechanism, without picking or bumping the locks.

While we continue to sing the praises of some brands of deadbolts that include wireless access control features, such as Bluetooth and WiFi, we cannot stress the importance enough, for customers of these products to be aware of the limitations of many simple to pick, bump or bypass key cylinders.
While the advent of modern technology continues to improve the products we use daily, especially in terms of access control, it is vital and important to realize that including some of this new technology, at this time tends to reduce any perceived security of our homes or offices.
The age of the mechanical key cylinder is still with us and using high security pick proof, bump proof and duplication prohibited keys, continues to offer the protection we have had and expected for the last 50 years.
Fotunately, many locksmiths around the country and around the world can advise you as to which types of key cylinders might be able to be incorporated into some of the better quality electronic solutions on the market. We strongly suggest you consult your local locksmith security professional for (often) unbiased advice on suitable physical security products for your intended applications.
